Kindergarten Learning Community

Ms. Jade Brooks

Ms. Brooks received her Bachelor’s of Science in Wildlife, Fish and Conservation Biology from UC Davis. She worked for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Max Planck Institute as a wildlife biologist before she realized a love for the field of education. Ms. Brooks once helped zoologists and curators develop educational exhibits at the Smithsonian’s museums and zoo in Washington, D.C. — an experience that showed her how much she loves to teach and inspire future generations to change the world. Upon returning to California, Ms. Brooks taught in school districts across Yolo County and earned her Multiple Subjects Teaching Credential from UC Davis. She is excited to be joining the Mattos team and looks forward to providing a safe and nurturing environment so all her students may be the most curious, mindful, and engaged scholars they can be!


Ms. Amberly Hsieh

Ms. Hsieh received her Bachelor's of Arts in Psychology, Bachelor's of Science in Human Development, and Minor in Education from the University of California, Davis. She then went on to receive her Teaching Credential and will continue to pursue her Master of Arts in Education in the upcoming year, again from UC Davis. She has experience working with students in the Davis Joint Unified School District as a first-, third-, and fifth-grade intern. Additionally, she worked in the Natomas Unified School District as a first grade student teacher. She is excited to be a part of the Mattos team, and to help each student grow and achieve their goals!

1st Grade Learning Community

Ms. Esther Chung

Ms. Chung received her Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies and her Multiple Subject Credential from California State University, Fullerton. Initially, she developed an interest in teaching through her volunteer work at the Korean Church of Orange County, Clavier Music School, Garden Grove Unified School District and Artesia Bloomfield and Carmenita Unified School District. She gained further experience as a student teacher in the Santa Ana Unified School District and the Anaheim City Unified School District. After receiving her education and training in Southern California, she planted her roots in Northern California and had the opportunity to teach 2nd grade at Curtner Elementary in the Milpitas Unified School District. Now, she is honored to be a part of the Mattos community, and she looks forward to nurturing the growth and development of Mattos students!

Ms. Alex Hernandez

Ms. Hernandez received her Bachelor's of Arts in Sociology and Minor in Psychology from San Jose State University. She later received her Master's of Arts in Teaching and Teaching Credential from Santa Clara University. She was a student teacher in kindergarten and 4th grade at Curtner Elementary in Milpitas Unified School District. Ms. Hernandez is also a Milpitas native and a proud graduate of the Milpitas Unified School District! Additionally, she has volunteered, working with children for local non-profit organizations. She looks forward to another amazing year at Mattos and is excited to help students succeed in their education and participation in school!


Ms. Natalie Tice

Ms. Tice received her Bachelor's of Science in Business from the University of San Francisco and her Master's of Arts in Teaching and Teaching Credential from Santa Clara University. Her past experience working with kids consists of being a Kindergarten and 4th grade Student Teacher in Berryessa Union School District and Preschool Teacher at Sunshine Preschool. Additionally, she has done volunteer work with kids at St. Victor's Church, Breakthrough Collaborative, Reading Partners SF, and Jensen's School for the Performing Arts (right here in Milpitas!). She is very excited to be a part of the Mattos community and work with you to support children's growth as they embark on their educational journey!

2nd/3rd Grade Learning Community

Ms. Amy Hoffman (2nd Grade Lead)

Ms. Hoffman grew up in the Bay Area and is so thankful to have been educated here. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and her Multiple Subject Teaching Credential from UC Davis, and she returned to the Bay to be near her parents and the community that gave her so much. Her student teaching experiences in Woodland and Davis spanned K through 6th grade, and she has been teaching at summer camps and schools since 2009. Ms. Hoffman especially enjoys teaching students about unity in diversity, botany, music, and new ways to approach problem solving. She is feeling joyful to be a part of Mabel Mattos Elementary’s second year.


Ms. Vivian Sun (3rd Grade Lead)

Ms. Sun looks forward to starting the first ever 3rd grade class at Mattos Elementary. She completed her Masters in education and teaching credential with Mandarin Bilingual Authorization at Stanford University and her Bachelor of Science in Biology from Haverford College. Her experience includes student teaching at Sunnyvale School District (5th grade and 2nd grade) and Santa Clara Unified School District (1st grade). She was a VIPKID English Teacher, New Student Evaluator, Teacher Evaluator and the Taiwan English Summer Camp Founder and Director. She grew up in New Jersey and spent her teenage years in Shanghai and Taiwan. She enjoys exploring new places, and often travels back to Taiwan where her parents live. She excited to embark on an exciting journey with her students and families this year.
