Posted Date: 8/08/25 (2:48 PM)

You are receiving this ParentSquare post because you are either enrolled at Mattos or are on the waitlist. If your plans have changed and you will not attend Mattos for the 2025-26 school year, please fill out this brief Mattos Withdrawal Form to let us know your plans. We will take care of the rest! If you are returning...

Greetings from Mrs. Armino, Mattos Principal!

We are excited to start the 2025-26 school year on Wednesday, August 13th at 8:45am. Campus opens at 8:30am. Please read the following information to make the start of the school year a smooth one for all.

First Three Days

The first three days of school, August 13-15 are minimum days for ALL TK-6 students. TK and Kindergarteners have an additional 2 minimum days of school from August 18 -19. See Bell Schedule. Campus opens when supervision begins, which is at 8:30. Students are considered tardy if they are not in line at 8:45. To avoid crowding, please clear the front of the school after dropping off your child. We know parents are excited to see each other too. Please hold longer conversations off campus so we can get everyone into campus safely and efficiently.

Minimum Day Schedule for August 13-15

  • TK and Kindergarten   8:45-12:05* (*Minimum Days for additional 2 days 8/18-19)

  • Grades 1-3                    8:45-1:05

  • Grades 4-6                   8:45-1:14

For the first day, all TK-2nd grade students are encouraged to wear a name tag with their name, teacher name, grade, and “Car Pick Up”, “Walk In Pick Up”, “TT", or “ATB” if you think that will help your child remember.

Drop Off

Campus opens at 8:30 for student drop off. Prepare for increased traffic challenges for those first days.  Practice PATIENCE and AWARENESS for others. Be KIND by following rules and being SAFE.  You will be greatly APPRECIATED for the part you play in keeping things running smoothly. Everyone should do your part to ensure a safe drop off and:

  • Walk to school if possible.

  • Do not block intersections or crosswalks with your car.

  • Watch for pedestrians.

  • Keep your children next to you at all times when walking.

  • Follow rules of drop off and pick up (pull all the way forward, get out of car in designated area only, students must get out on the passenger side, place backpacks on lap, etc..)

  • Stay off basketball courts and playgrounds which are closed between 7:30am-6:00pm

There will be two options for drop off by car:

  • Assisted Valet in the Drive Thru Lane

    • This is the option for students who need help getting out of their car. There will be staff present to help open and close doors from the passenger side.

    • Drivers do not get out of your vehicle and do not let children out unassisted.

    • Passengers exit from the passenger side only. Do not have children walk around vehicle and between cars

    • Have backpack/water/lunch ready on lap. Do not open your trunk.

  • Unassisted unloading on McCandless Drive

    • This is the option for families with children who do not need help getting out of the car. This is not a parking spot. You can drop off students on the sidewalk on McCandless Drive where there is a white curb. Students can walk down the sidewalk and enter through the main Mattos entrance. Do not drop off before the parking lot at the "right turn only" lane.

Parking

To ensure a smooth flow of traffic, our parking is closed from 8:30-8:45 to prevent a backup of cars and so that students can safely walk from the unloading zone onto the school campus. If you would like to park your car or have business in the office, be sure to park before 8:30 or come after 8:45.

Pick Up

Students should know how they are getting home every day. For the first day, all TK-2nd grade students are encouraged to wear a name tag with their name, teacher name, grade, and “Car Pick Up”, “Walk In Pick Up”, “TT", or “ATB” if you think that will help your child remember.

  • Picking up by car (valet)

    • Place a 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper with child’s first and last name and grade written in marker and large letters that is easily visible by staff and students on your dashboard or window.

    • Students will walk out to the basketball courts to await their vehicle.

    • Tell your child who will pick them up at the end of the day.

    • If you have a daycare provider pick up your child with other children, let the daycare know:

      • They should follow the same pickup procedures as parents

      • They should write the name of the daycare on top of the paper and all student’s first/last names and grades. If they have multiple pickups, have a separate list for each pickup.

  • Picking up at the main gate by foot

    • Meeting at the TK/K playground yard

      • TK

    • Meeting at the main entrance gate

      • K-6

  • Walking home

    • Students can walk home when parents allow

    • Make sure you communicate clearly with your child so they can confidently inform their teachers.

    • Tell children they must walk home immediately with no unplanned stops.

Safety Measures and Closed Campus

Mattos is a closed campus except for staff, students, and scheduled volunteers for safety. We encourage scheduled volunteers on our campus. If you would like to volunteer in our school, complete the MUSD Volunteer Form and email to Julien Kim, principal secretary at jukim@musd.org

Learning Community Model and Lead Teacher Assignment

Mattos is a Learning Community School. This means that students are not assigned one class with one teacher. They are one large learning community with a team of teachers who support them. Each child will be assigned a home base to start the day with a lead teacher prior to any learning community regrouping. The lead teacher they should report to at the start of the first day of school will be ready for viewing on the Aeries Parent Portal on Tuessday, 8/12 at 10am. See Aeries Parent Portal Information Guide if needed.  It is possible for you to see a teacher's name in Aeries or ParentSquare prior to that date and that information is not reliable. Wait until August 12th to learn who your child’s lead teacher is. This assignment is also subject to change up to the 3rd week of school per the MUSD Handbook due to shifts in enrollment. All Mattos staff are prepared to support your child with an excellent personalized education and requests are not accommodated. If you have trouble accessing the lead teacher's name in Aeries, you can contact Principal's Secretary Julien Kim, jukim@musd.org

If you enrolled your child after open seats were already filled, you may see your lead teacher assignment as “Flex Teacher”. This is not an error and means that we will need to see what space opens up after taking attendance on the first day of school. On the first day of school, your child will be with a guest teacher, for the full day and will be given a school assignment as soon as open seats are identified (as early as the first hour of school and up to 5 days). If there are no seats at Mattos, the district will assign you another Milpitas elementary school until a seat at Mattos opens. The Office Staff will contact you if a change in placement has been made. You should send your child to Mattos daily until you are informed otherwise. If you have already been notified on a school assignment to another Milpitas school, attend that school on the first day.

All students are expected to be present and on time on the first day of school, Wednesday, August 13th to keep their Mattos seat. No exceptions will be made. Students who do not attend the first day of school on time will be moved to the unassigned list and be assigned an MUSD school where there is space when they return.

A Word on Combination/Multi-Age Bases

There may be multiple grades in a base. This is a regular MUSD practice at all elementary schools at 1st/2nd, 2nd/3rd, 4th/5th and 5th/6th. If this sounds new and unusual to you, know that it is a familiar and longstanding practice for MUSD and our schools are designed to meet the needs of your child within a larger learning community within which they reorganize regularly and are supported by the entire teacher team. Your child will receive an excellent education and learn with their grade level peers regardless of being in a same-age or multi-age base. It is likely that all students will be in a multi-age base at some point in their Mattos career. All Mattos staff are prepared to support your child with an excellent personalized education and requests out of a combination/multi-age base will not be accommodated. For more information, please see the MUSD handbook, page 18 under Elementary Combination Classes.

Uniforms

All students are expected to be dressed in full uniform starting on the first day of school. This includes athletic closed toe shoes (no sandals, crocs, Mary Janes, boots, etc.). See our Uniform Policy. Students not in uniform will be sent home a form explaining which area was not followed. Items can be purchased at any retail store including but not limited to Target, Walmart, Gap, Kohl’s, and Costco. We gladly accept donated uniforms if you no longer need them to trade with other families. Simply place washed clothes in a bag and drop them off in the office.

Aeries

Please make sure you have updated all of your information in Aeries.  Aeries is linked to ParentSquare which is our primary method of communication. Download the ParentSquare app for instant communication to keep yourself up to date and informed of important dates and deadlines.

We are excited to welcome you to a new school year. Enjoy the last days of summer and see you on the first day of school!
