School Leader Notes

Dear Mattos Students & Parents,

Welcome to our amazing school.  It is being transformed right before our eyes!

It is my honor to welcome you Mabel Mattos Elementary School, a learning community school in the Milpitas Unified School District. It has been my pleasure developing the relationships that bring us together as a community in service of our students.  The first five founding years at Mattos were wonderful years of joy and growth for all of us. The global pandemic and distance learning challenged us to meet our educational goals strategically, collectively, and with flexibility. We returned in person full time to a completed campus in August 2023. This year, 2023-24 we've expanded more with new grass fields.

At Mattos, we strive for excellence in developing our young people to become all they aspire to be. We do this with a caring community of staff, students, and parents who work together to create academically and emotionally nurturing environments supporting the various modalities of learning. Students reach proficiencies in core content standards as well as learning and innovation skills to become creative, innovative, self-directed learners to apply skills with the moral imperative of social responsibility to better humanity. 

Inherent in our learning communities are systemic structures that guide responsiveness to our students' academic and social emotional needs. Through personalized learning, students get the instruction and direction they need when they need it. Our learning communities also provide multiple opportunities for students to engage in learning using the learning modalities that suit their learning styles.

I look forward to partnering with you as we continue to grow Mabel Mattos Elementary, MUSD’s first learning community school!
